Pontics being very close to Armenians (and the Laz and, of course, the Hemshin) is historically accurate because the Empire of Trebizond, especially in the (post-1204 A.D.) successor state era, is essentially a Greco-Armeno-Georgian kingdom, in both its population structure and its ruling royalty (Queen Tamar was instrumental in her role of capturing Chaldea for the Komnenians, for example).

From my results (updated k12b) it seems that there's almost a complete overlap between Greeks and Turks of Pontus and an equal distance to Laz people and Armenians. The Hemshin, though, seem to be closer. Are they closer to Pontic Greeks than to other Armenians? Correct me if I'm wrong.

There should be overlap but Pontics should show variation even between themselves, Western shores vs Eastern Shores, Crimea to Caucasus to Turkey, etc.

The ethnography, however, of all these 3, the Laz, the Pontic Greeks/Turks, and the Hamshen has striking similarities, which would imply a common ancestral group at some point.

For the case of Pontic Greeks (of Eastern Pontus), I subscribe to the theory that they are the long lost part of the tribe of Tzan/Macrones (or Sanni as mentioned by Strabo) that got fused with the Ionic and Carian settlers of Trapezus and adjacent areas.

The Armenian connection could be either a result of historical medieval Byzantine intermingling (Armenians were the go-to population for footsoldier and/or settler recruiting post Basil II-era especially) or coincidental positioning on the PCA, or both. Pontic Greeks don't really carry R1b haplos, which is one of the biggest categories for Armenians (25%+).
