I feel this thread, I can only make Euro descended Americans look fit and healthy for so long lol . The stereotype is we're fat and lazy with bad skin, I imagine that's how a lot abroad view us, I try my best everyday to amp up the image of the European descended American. Here in France people are extremely beautiful and the environment is extremely beautiful too. I can't stand anymore to be surrounded by so much ugliness in Belgium, referring to the people and the environment. It makes me feel even uglier to be linked to such population. It is extremely painful, it causes a lot of suffering.

What my gripe is with Belgium is that people care a bit too little. Many call it liberating, but enjoying the fruits of one's own blood, sweat and tears is more gratifying to me. I don't want to relax and chill and Dutch Protestants never relax, it's a sin for them to be idle. That can be very stressful and has many downsides to it, I even went over my limits more than once. However, Dutch people are still among the happiest people in the world.

You just should not allow people way dumber than you to hold authority over you, in the Netherlands. A recipe for disaster and failure. Otherwise, great country. From the outside I can also appreciate Belgium better.

In my opinion we just need a few tweaks here and there, as long as we exist as a country, of course. That is very uncertain as our economy and its disparity between the Flemish and Walloon regions, together with the divided politics makes it very difficult. I also get the feeling Walloons don't really like Flemish and vice versa. French are friendlier in my experience, because they don't share a country with us. Ironically.

Many Dutch also prefer Belgium because at least Belgians aren't so rigid. Mocking Belgians is less common nowadays there (used to be very commonplace). Also, Belgians are somewhat becoming more present in the Netherlands which used to be rare.

Tl;dr. Belgians get mocked because we are too nice. The nicest people of all of Europe, but often to our own detriment and also gullible. We also don't dare looking beyond our direct region. We do pick up high culture from all of the world, but are blind for what is around us and country bumpkins there. So both the Dutch and French mock us for our perceived 'stupidity'.
