I played it, but then came shogun total war sometime in the early 00's, and I never looked back.

I used to play AOE 2 a lot and a bit of AOE 1. I found AOE 3 a let down.

I then converted to Medieval Total War II and the Kingdoms expansion.. never looked back.

My favorite PC game series also.

I was an AOE & ROR enthusiast from 2001 to 2008. I was especially interested in creative scenario (map) design carefully following the works of the great designers including Rich Parker, Imhotep, Stephen Dumas, Ingo van Thiel, and Andrea Rosa. I occasionally play ROR and occasionally drop by AOE Heaven's site and forum to catch the latest AOE/ROR news and see if any small treasures have been unearthed. http://aoe.heavengames.com/

I was not quite as involved with AOE II as I was with the first title. I have not played that game in four years.

I played AOE III and its two expansions recreationally. I still occasionally play the The Asian Dynasties.

I have not had time to try the recent cartoonish AOE Online. I really do not like what I have seen.

I am hoping for an elaborate AOE (prehistoric and ancient civ) remake in the future.

There is a new age of empires with ancient civs, it's called Age of Empires Online, I play it ocasionally with the Celts, you also have Greeks, Egyptians and Persians avaliable. It's fun, but nothing impressive as the old titles were.

I play Age of Empires II a little aswell, but not that much.

It's graphics were beyond amazing and had a disntinctive feel that you really were transported back hundreds of years and were the ruler of a people.
    Otherwise, it was not realistic.
    However it was fun.
    My best Civs :
Hitties (AOE 1) Rome (Rise of Rome)
    Teutons (AOE 2) Mayans (Conquerors)
British (AOE 3) Indians (Asian dynasties)

    Anybody played Praetorians?
This was far more realistic and interesting from the perspective of Fighting skirmishes.

I always liked playing civs for what they represented, rather than how they played - I would adapt.
As such in AOE2 I ended up playing Spanish, Goths, Franks, Byzantines and Bretons. I liked Teutons aswell, but the TKs were too slow and easily kited for my liking..I've always had a special furstration for kiting in all games, I'm a melee lover.

Yeah, every civ had its ups and downs.
The British Longbowmen mass fire was cool.
    Spanish Gunfire demolished Persian Elephants.
Teutonic Knights meleed other armoured units into oblivion.
    Goths were unstoppable against Mongols.
    Mayan Archers 'looked cool'.
Aztec Infantry gave the Celts and Japs a run for their money.
Frankish Paladins were just majestic, standing tall with their capes flying and plumes waving.
Byzantine Array of units was simply amazing. They had every kind of bloody unit!

Yes indeed, but I always loved when I could use my Cataphracts, arguably my favourite unit in the game. The splash damage upgrade was simply fantastic aswell.
I just hated the fact they didn't have all the blacksmith melee upgrades..and the fact they used islamic buildings

Oh and I loved Vikings aswell!
