(1) It was no more authoritarian than most other Western countries were in its response. (2) Personally, I find French politics and culture to be more statist and authoritarian than German politics and culture, even though for sure it is less obedient and more rebellious in many ways too.

1. I get where you're coming from, my bad, think I just had the lense of an American on, due to half our country was authoritarian about the virus. While the other half, I was part of didn't make us wear masks, get vaccines, or lock us down, etc. 2. And, nice I'm gonna look at the French politics. How do UK politics compare in those regards?

Currently, German freedom is impeded by American overlordship. Germany is a vassal of the United States, and is not allowed to have an independent foreign policy or even economic policy.

The German economy's competitiveness is based on cheap energy from Russia. But now America has forced Germany to cut that off. No more Nord Stream 2. Or even Nord Stream 1. Therefore, the heydays of German economic dominance in Europe seems to be grinding to a halt. And I guess that is why Olaf Scholz is so frustrated.

Although the French public has a much greater propensity to protest and get angry than does the German public, nevertheless the way France is generally managed is more statist (for good and for ill) than Germany: higher taxes, more nationalised industries, tighter controls on freedom of speech etc. As for the UK, politics since Thatcher has been basically about "privatising the economy while nationalising the public", in the astute and acid words of John Gray. Make that what you will.
