The German president is the head of the state and represents the German state internationally.

And now millions of German commoners feel offended and will be stopped in their felt solidarity with Ukraine.

It depends on what you mean by "powerful". Economically, yes. Militarily, not so much. They are miles away from what they could potentially be. The UK, France, Italy and maybe even Spain have had more capable armies in the last decades. However, this may change in a short period of time if they go ahead with their promise to triple their budget for military spending and investment.

Germany can only blame itself for the strategy it has adopted in recent years. As the most economically powerful nation in Europe it had no need to become virtually dependent on Russia for energy without any viable alternative. Honestly if I were Ukrainian I wouldn't look kindly on diplomatic visits by Steinmeier, Macron or any head of state who has been complacent with Putin and who has a track record with Russia. We already had enough time to realize that no one is going to help them in practice anyway so let them at least maintain their dignity; if that is being African-tier then respect to the Ukrainians.

That's exactly what I mean. Between German unification and the end of the World Wars, even if it wasn't THE most powerful nation in Europe, it was up there. Of course their new "friends" after the war basically crippled them to the point where even Ukraine knows they're weak enough to not care about their support.

I dont respect them or thank them.

We could use the increased defense budget for more serious things like fixing our infrastructure or make sure our retired people can live of their pension.
