It's not a meme, and it has been already the case in 2017 and in other elections for his party (La République en marche = LREM) : his main electoral sociology are old people over 65 years because they like his center-right economic policies favouring rich and already retired old people (who have already paid back their mortgage and don't have kids anymore at home to support financially)
Macron has, as many political commentators in France points out for years, the biggest scam in political marketing : presenting himself as "young, energetic leader" of the youth, while being massively favoured by old boomers and not by the youth
You can see the first round results of this year, that even more amplified the pattern (in French, but you will get the point, it breaks down results by age category) :
The highest among the youth, are Mélenchon (leftist-socialist like Bernie Sanders type in the US, that many urban college students and Frenchs of immigrant background/Muslim/minority of color fighting against "racism & discrimination") or for Marine Le Pen (which is not really conservative-right, but rather more like Trump, populist for helping the middle and lower classes living in periphery/rural France, mostly trade workers in factories, agricultures, small SMEs employees and business owners)
Macron is caricaturally strong among the bourgeoisie (highly educated, executive/management positions in big corporations, open to progressive values and globalization) and old people. In Marxist terms, he is the stereotypical leader of the ruling bourgeois class against the proletarians (split between Mélenchon and Le Pen).
See in the chart above (yellow = Macron), the clear patterns :
- The lower the income, the less likely to vote Macron (= the wealthier, the more likely, see those earning more than 3000 EUR/month)
- The younger the person, the less likely to vote Macron (= the older, the more likely, see those above 60 years old)
- Cadres (= executive/management positions in companies) & Retraité (retired people) = highest vote for him. Ouvriers (= manual workers, like in factories, car mechanics, contractors, ...) = lowest vote for him
