As of several years ago, the average Federal employee salary in Northern Virginia was $113k a year. It's definitely higher now.

Its pretty far out from DC. Most of the government workers are in Fairfax and Arlington counties.

None of them want to be in the high society of Richmond (aka Detroit-on-the-James). I suspect that if you ask most people who live in Northern Virginia, they would be fine with making Northern Virginia it's own state, separate from the rest of Virginia.

I meant most of them are come-heres. They aren't old time Virginians. They may be born here but that's it. They have no deep roots here. They know this. Most of them are not WASP. They wouldn't ever fit into proper old Virginia society. Richmond was a very nice city until recently. Often compared to Charleston in terms of wealth and importance. Real Virginia intimidates them. Northern Virginians are mostly new moneyed carpetbaggers and they know it.
