The north isn't small, it's just that Africa is huge. You can check it by looking at a globe with the countries, for example on Google Earth. A 2D representation will always be distorted.

Africa, roughly 30 million sq km, Russia, 16 million. Those nations closer to the equator on our standard mercator map are represented relatively accurately. Surely you didn’t believe Russia or Scandinavia or Greenland were that large?
