when chuck inventoried and graded my collection thirty years ago — his bid was huge...
...compared to what my book-store paid:
half the cover-price.
paper-back books, magazines, and comic-books
are purchased at half-price by retailers
and the un-sold copies are credited to your account
if the cover is returned to the supplier.
the last two comics were gifts
from a long-time friend.
my comic-collection is complete
up until the cover-prices passed one dollar.
there had to be a limit
to that investment — even if an arbitrary one.
every year,
chuck sends a new bid for my collection.
the last few years the number has diminished
with the market-contraction.
in the beginning,
talking to chuck on the telephone
was as strange as talking to bud plant:
they were young teen-agers.
missus plant would answer their telephone
and yell "Buddy! It's for you!" and after the sound of running foot-steps — a child's voice.
they grew to dominate the comic-book market
and became millionaires.
