I'm seeing more and more of this 'Putin is Hitler' analogy. A quick Google search shows 31,000,000 results.
According to a research paper by FW Radiff (2012), the conditions in Russia since the end of the Cold War and the dissolution of the Soviet Union lend themselves to a comparison to the Weimar Germany model. The Russian people, like the German people at the end of WWI, felt that they had been “stabbed in the back” by politicians.
WHAT'S GODWIN'S LAW? IT'S THIS IDEA THAT THE LONGER A CONVERSATION GOES ON, IT'LL INEVITABLY INVOLVE NAZIS.
In culture high and low today, Hitler stands as a firmly rooted moral nadir. In today's context, Nazism specifically and fascism generally are most often cited by partisans of both sides without reference to their actual contents. A development of the idea states that once Godwin's Law has been invoked, the discussion itself no longer serves any useful purpose, as the level of debate has fallen too low for it to make any further meaningful contribution.
The tendency to bring up Nazi Germany in any argument inspired Godwin's Law and the related reductio ad Hiterlum. Godwin's Law holds that “As an on-line discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches one.” Not only is Godwin's Law an affront to humor (how could P. J. O'Rourke have written his classic 1982 essay on Safety Nazis if there'd some imaginary censor hovering at his shoulder, tut-tutting about the impropriety of the joke?), but it's also an assault on the rich metaphorical possibilities of the English language. Being unfunny and limiting freedom of speech: isn't that ever so slightly—um—Nazi-ish?
https://www.google.com/books/edition...sec=frontcoverTrump is like Hitler! Charlie the cat is like Hitler! Now, I don't usually like making the Hitler analogy. It's called Godwin's law and shows a lack of historical knowledge. The Nazis weren't the only bad guys in history.
DO tell anyone who calls you a Nazi that they've automatically lost the argument for violating Godwin's Law of Nazi Analogies, which says that in any sufficiently long Internet discussion, someone will eventually compare his or her opponent to Nazis or Hitler. Be sure to make this point while calling your opponent everything short of a Nazi (i.e., digital brownshirt, cyber jihadist, fascist troll, and, where appropriate, batshitcrazy, genocidal douche bag).
And yes, Godwin's Law itself has been compared to Nazi censorship. You couldn't make it up.
It's just that we need to avoid exaggerations and ad hominem attacks so flippantly while discussing important issues. The comedian Jon Stewart said it best:
“You know who's like Hitler? Hitler!”
Fun fact: Hitler's identification with Wagner was so profound that Hitler declared 'to understand Nazism one must first know Wagner'. In devotion to his idol, from his prison cell Hitler began signing his letters with characteristic references to his composer hero.
