Not true. The original church was called "The Way". The Catholic church got off Biblically. Martin Luther wanted a back to the basics approach to Christianity which is what Protestantism was for.

To tell the truth, the concept of Hell (Hel in Norse mythology), never made any kind of sense to me. Don't reply with a zillion Bible verses, because I've heard them all, and none of them changed my mind.
