Some 2,600 people in the Netherlands have now reached the age of at least 100 and that is an increase of 400 on 2017, national statistics office CBS said on Thursday. The CBS had forecast a sharp rise in the number of centenarians following the baby boom in the years after World War II. The increase comes despite the impact of coronavirus, which disproportionately affected the elderly who lived in residential homes. Zeeland has the most centenarians per head of the population and Flevoland, a relatively new province, the least. Women account for 80% of the over-100s.
