I have read in a hungarian history magazine that if an aristocrat family had no male descedants then sometimes they rised up one of their girl as male. She used male given name and she was in incognito to hide her gender. When the medieval austro-hungarian army besieged Damietta (together with other europeans) during the Fifth Crusade then the bishop of Győr described a female knight among the soldiers. So this thing existed but it was very rare.
