Today on Iceland is a celebration of Icelandic National Day (Icelandic: Ţjóđhátíđardagurinn). It is connected with the foundation of The Republic of Iceland on 17 June 1944. This date also marks the end of Iceland's centuries old ties with Denmark and it coincides with the birthday of Jón Sigurđsson, a major figure of Icelandic culture and the leader of the 19th century Icelandic independence movement.
The formation of the republic was based on a clause in the 1918 Act of Union with Denmark, which allowed for a revision in 1943, as well as the results of the 1944 plebiscite which happened in 20-23 May 1944. The plebiscite said clearly "we want to be independent republic" so it happened, Danish king even sent a letter with congratulations after the plebiscit so there was no big fuss about it from the Danish.
This day the make parades in each city with brass band leading, then horse riders and scouts. Then some speeches are made with so called Fjallkonan who recites a poem. She represents the fierce spirit of the Icelandic nation and of Icelandic nature. After the public speeches are over, less formal celebrations ensue, usually including a variety of musical performances.
Happy Independence Day Iceland!
