Its democracy has always been ambivalent since its inception. Even De Tocqueville found it paradoxical, saying "more than anywhere else, Americans reject all external authority and believe in their right to exercise private judgement, and yet in no other nation does there exist less independence of thought." (My emphasis). In other words, whereas more 'traditional' societies maintain conformity either through brute force or old-fashioned sources of authority like priests, imams and tribal leaders, in the US conformity is maintained through collective public opinion.
