    Actually not.

Just a sister of mine, who was literally into that 2004 tsunami (at Koh Phi Phi, Thailand).

Interesting. Did she escaped on second/third floors of one of the tourist hotels on the island? Ko Phi Phi was one of the most devastated areas by 2004 tsunami in Thailand together with Khao Lak area in the north. In both these places casualties were very high, especially between tourists from Europe (mostly Scandinavians and Germans).

Well in Croatia earthquakes are different, since they occur mostly in very shallow deeps (around 10km). Such earthquakes are very local and are not felt very strong and far from its source. But such earthquakes can cause very big destruction near the epicentre, since the hypocentre is very close to the surface, and relatively week earthquake of 5 can cause plenty of damage, like March 2020 Zagreb earthquake for example.

Yes. This one I witnessed was epicentre in Pivka, SW Slovenia, very close to Croatian border (I lived in Rijeka in that time).
I felt one in Zagreb weakly and another one in Petrinja (also central Croatia) I didn't feel at all.

So you are very right we have shallow earthquakes, but those near them can have very bad impact.

I'm shocked with what you wrote about Moldova and SE Carpathians. Because I remember once looking map of Europe and I remember thinking I'm envy of people living in Moldova or Ukraine because it looks very calm and safe area, compared to eg. Croatia or Italy.

Had no idea such earthquakes can occur into your region and at such depths and can be felt even deep into Russia!!!

    Even 7 or more magnitude?!!

    That's really scary

Yes, this area is one of the most vulnerable to earthquakes place in Europe.

Moldova is not affected very much, most of destruction from most of the earthquakes occurs in South Romania (Wallachia) with some exceptions, like 1802 and 1940 Vrancea earthquakes who affected very much entire Moldova too. Ironically Vrancea region is south-west historical Moldavian region but proper Moldova is less affected by earthquakes from this region.

For example 1977 Vrancea earthquake intensity map. Almost entire Wallachia experienced strong shaking, but in Moldova only south-western part including Vrancea region. Today Republic was not very much affected, even in the south.

I was lucky not to experience natural disasters, except for some earthquakes. Apart from those, I've only heard sometimes from the national news about floods, extreme hail storms and even tornados (even though they are not typical in this part of the world). And recently, I've heard that many wildfires are happening.
One of the strongest earthquake I experienced, was in October 2004; it had 6Mw (epicenter was also in Vrancea). Back then, I was residing at the top floor of a 10-story building of flats. And it took me by surprise, because I was sleeping when it began. For a split second I actually believed the building will collapse, the swaying was really strong.

I have experienced strong earthquakes in the past but they weren't as strong to create damage. Wildfires are quite common in Greece and they can destroy large areas of land, but thankfully I've never been in the middle of one.
