Eighteen African migrants are dead and 76 injured after a mass storming of the Spanish exclave of Melilla in North Africa.

A Spanish government spokesperson said about 2,000 migrants attempted to cross, and 133 managed to breach the border of the Spanish territory, according to Associated Press. Those who made it through proceeded to a local migrant center where Spanish authorities are evaluating their cases.

Surrounded by Morocco, Melilla is a five-square-mile territory on the eastern side of a rocky peninsula on the Mediterranean Sea. Both Melilla and Ceuta—a similarly-situated Spanish territory—have been subjected to periodic border-storming over the years.

The two autonomous Spanish territories present migrants with the only land borders between Africa and the European Union, making them appealing targets for those who would otherwise have to attempt a Mediterranean crossing.

A large group of sub-Saharans [Africans]...broke through the access gate of the Barrio Chino border checkpoint and entered Melilla by jumping over the roof of the checkpoint,” local Spanish government authorities said in a statement. All of them were reportedly adult men; the stampede began at 6:40 am local time.

n what Al Jazeera characterized as a "violent, two-hour skirmish," 49 members of the Spanish Civil Guard police were also injured. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said "human trafficking militias" had orchestrated "a well-organized, violent assault."

So in other words they're rewarded for breaking the law. There is no need to 'evaluate' their cases. They came illegally. This provides an incentive for them to try over and over again until they make it.

You haven't explained anything about its importance or strategic advantage. Unless you just want land. That territory is tiny and not strategic unless ships are coming the alantic into the medditernean. its useless for migration control. As evident by you guys still having the problem.

It's a shame, the images are harsh.
The government should either accept all or accept none. But that thing of making them cross the entire sahara, morocco... make them fight with the Moroccan police and make them scale the fence. To finally "reward" the few survivors as some kind of prize seems sadistic to me. But the false goodness of governments is like this

Seems more fair this way. And more sensible. Migrants are crossing through the water. Not through land.
Nope, Morocco did not exist yet as state. (despite what the reinvented Moroccan history says now).

At that time it was like the coast of Somalia, an ungovernable chaos of small tribes and a coast where there were only settlements dedicated to piracy.

As for Gibraltar, the circumstances surrounding its "annexation" to the British Empire have very little to do with it.

But yes, I suppose that sooner or later, Ceuta and Melilla will cease to be Spanish.

Which will imply relocating a large part of the population of those two cities that I doubt will want to stop being Spanish.

What I saw in catalan TV regarding this matter.

    - Brutality of moroccan police, they should denounce at moroccan and spanish courts.
    - Interview to NGO, they say the usual, emigrating is a right which must be respected, they consider Spain "co-responsible" for the tragedy and criticize Sánchez's words in which he praised Morocco's performance.
    - Interviews to migrants in Morocco and in Melilla, they say they live in hell, pursued and harassed, and all they want is a better life for their families.
    - Demostration of african immigrants and spanish afro-descendents in Barcelona, they say the same as NGO. 'Las vidas negras importan'.
    - Spanish govern and Sanchez have been called to declare in spanish parliament by their leftist partners, despite facts happened in Morocco.

Not a word about the assault to a frontier with violence, the injured police men, the right to defend one's own borders, the opinions (a lot) of people and organizations that support this right...

Everybody criticising moroccan and spanish police, Sanchez's words and policies against migrants. That is.
They simply ignore other opinions and positionings about the matter.

    Official UE reaction:

The events at Melilla border crossing are deeply troubling.
First and foremost, in the loss of life.
Secondly, forced, and violent, crossing of an international border can never be condoned.
This tragedy underlines why we need…
