How does the US justify support for Taiwan?

I'm just curious. Because officially, American policy confirms the "One China" policy, and that Beijing is the government of China. This is also true of the United Nations, and just about every other country on earth. Maybe one or two dissents.

So, for how long can the US continue to militarily support Taiwanese independence?

The irony of the matter is that the regime in Taipei also does not believe in Taiwanese independence! They claim sovereignty over all of China! This is obviously a relic of a time long gone by.
