Despite the fact that Germany and Italy are (1) both High Income developed nations and (2) at least at their southernmost and northernmost respective extremes not that far apart geographically, the gap in their perceived levels of corruption is immense. According to Transparency International's annual Corruption Perceptions Index, Germany's latest score is 8.0, and it is the 10th least corrupt country in the world, whereas Italy's latest score is 5.6 (during Berlusconi's time it was much worse) and, jointly with Poland and St Lucia, it is the 42nd least corrupt country in the world (albeit second only to Greece in being the most corrupt country within Western Europe).
