May they rest in peace, we don't know their motivations but maybe they were just well intentioned people thinking they were doing the right thing.
However when joining a foreign war (in this particularly case Ukrainians don't even need soldiers but weaponry instead), one have to be mindful that there's a considerable possibility that you'll gonna end up being used as cannon fodder. It was always like that, given the choice between using foreigner forces and local ones in the most dangerous situations, foreigners will be the first to be called. If they win you win, if they lose and many times die you'll lose less than using your kind, sad but true.

Foreigners are almost always used as cannon fodder. Dead foreigners don't hurt morale at home.
The one exception I can think of was the Kurds fighting against ISIS. They kept most foreigners out of the front (to their annoyance). They thought it would be bad PR if foreigners died in combat but in most cases no one cares if foreigners die.
