There are many Irish surnames that were transliterated into an English form. The English form pre-existed them, of course. The Irish Mullins (who are not descendants of English ones) are just a curious and rare form of Mallin or Ui Maolain or whatever. Your Mayflower girl is NOT one of these. I don't know the details, but it seems she was from SURREY.

Magister does not simply stand on US soil. He was born there, as were his parents and grandparents. The overwhelming part of his childhood formative experience was American. He sounds American. He looks American. The same is true of all family members he has met. He is a product of America. He is accepted without question by fellow Americans as one of their own.

His case has NOTHING in common with that of Pakis in England.

Holding to your logic, though, I will have everything in common with Pakis in England in two to three generations. That's what's wrong with the idea that Americans & Australians aren't "real Europeans". We've got the same blood in our veins that you have in yours.

It's not my fault that you are so incapable of thinking of any more nuanced way of belonging to a country than by residence or genetics. Our real history is all across the Atlantic; the best native history we have is a rebellion, a civil war, and the willing surrender of our people and our latent cultural creativity to the Negro. The story of America is a story of betrayal, greed, and cultural destruction; I say with sadness that I am by virtue of being born here trapped in that history, but it is not a national history. We do not have the makings of a nation, only of a mob with a government.

Those who choose not to be part of the mob are not part of the mob: nothing about my blood or my ancestry obligates me to call myself "American" - "America" is a geographical expression, and nothing more. The worst I can be (and I suppose the best I can be) is a man without a nation, who must appeal to the broad reality of Europe for as a cultural banner, because no individual nation of Europe will (apparently) accept me.

This actually makes more sense to me. America is still too affected by the Puritan values of the past. You all were smart to kick them out, especially England. Then again, Scotland have some big bible thumpin' Presbyterians, but I'm not sure if they have any negative lasting affects on Scottish culture.

Osweo is correct, Mullins is an English name. There's also an Irish version of the name but no reason to suppose that a person named Mullins born in England is anything but English. Why do you have to make everything Celtic?
