Massachusetts close to banning natural hair discrimination
July 19, 2022
It may soon be illegal in Massachusetts to discriminate against someone based on their hair texture or style.
The Massachusetts state Senate and House on Monday enacted a bill that would protect people with natural hairstyles — including braids, locks, twists and other protective styles — against discrimination in many settings. The bill now goes to Gov. Charlie Baker for his signature.
This bill is a slightly different version of bills both chambers passed in the spring. The Senate wanted to extend discrimination protections to religious schools and private school athletes, but the final bill does not apply to those institutions.
