I don't understand how Spaniards are classified in the USA.

Aren't those who speak Spanish classified as Hispanic or 'non-white'? A lot of publications seem to put people like Javier Bardem, Antonio Banderas and others in the POC category and leave out Southern Euros. Why is this? Are they considered less white than other Southern Euros?

Hispanic just means you come from a spanish speaking country in census and forms.
They ask for race which is why they ask if you are non white hispanic.

Yes, people from Spain in the US are part of the hispanic label. But there is now typically a hispanic-white label on forms. I guess that would constitute any white latino americans and of course spaniards. Us Portuguese typically just put white… ofc personally I say I am Hispanic (not white) because im brown! Jk jk

Yes Spain is the only European country which is considered hispanic, or seperate from all other European countries even if they are considered racially white, there is still the BUT, the ethnicity category HISPANIC, HISPANIC IS A ETHNICITY CATEGORY and Spaniards are the only Europeans who are under that umbrella. Weird. Spaniards separated from other white Europeans to be put alongside blacks. Has this attitude changed or is it quite recent? On the other hand, the 'Oscars so White' controversy included the Irishman Italian actors as white etc. Is it simply the association with South America - if you speak Spanish it is somehow seen as less white than other European languages... I've tried to keep up with America's insane racial attitudes.

Actually its thanks to spain. This is a thing because of the spanish American war most likely.
Hispanic refers to if you are of spanish heritage. Not if you are brown. Thats why they if you are white non hispanic , then ask if you are hispanic or black or asian ect.
