Most of the ageing perception has to do with the unspoken code of wearing clothing deemed tasteful or identifiably and recognizably functional based on occupation in cities and towns, and the code was largely adhered to after a day's work when one went out of an evening or on weekends at all hours: Suits with ties, and fedoras atop heads, or less often derbies, dresses of expensive fabric for women with non clashing headwear. Such bygone folk even at 18 were considered young adults, which is why most movies until 1960 give the false impression of premature ageing: They looked and acted adult, not some woke shit looking for a safe space from opposing views.

I've observed that old people used to look younger.
Spoiler!

I think its mostly perception, but I see teenagers today that look mid 30s.

Its a mixed bag, but I am mostly shocked at how old teenagers look now. When I was in high school in the late 90s, my graduating class looked all baby faced like Freshman. Today, I see high schoolers who look way old for their age. There's a girl at work who is 16. I thought she was 28. But then there's high school boys who have pronounced facial hair as well. No one is getting "younger" these days. If anything they are ageing faster.

It just depends on our personal experiences. Many of the guys, in my high school yearbook, look like narcs and Paul Bunyan. They look quite manly. Sadly, I wasn't one of them.
I had an experience at my aunt's house, along the lines of the thread's subject. It taught me to never guess ages. This 18-year-old girl, very short and very thin (in my defense), mentioned that she danced somewhere over the weekend. I then asked her if it was at a junior high school prom (oops).
