Well it is a thing for people who become enthralled with extraterrestrials to eventually be "visited" or just dissappear. I don't think it's to keep them quiet though, I think it's because once you put out to much of a scent of fear they will smell it and come. That's because they are demons, they have to have doors opened to them, similar to how you have to invite a witch into your home, she can't just break in. Or like with black magic, with the requirement of something resembling consent. In this case, fear and obsession is an invitation, a form of consent, an open door. You know the similarities between "alien encounters" and demon possession?

People come and go for various reasons. Some people leave for long stretches of a time and then come back and then go (myself, One-Eye, Longbowman, etc.) for various reasons: tired of repetitive topics, busy banging broads, work related, etc.
I would bet Longbowman is involved in some sort of training. The British army is probably on high alert and focusing on conventional warfare training after years of focusing on small scale unconventional war.
