Draconian punishments don't prevent crime. Look at the US and their recidivism rate for one example. Despite being a first-world nation, their prison system is one of the harshest and to what end? Though I agree that some things that we consider as normal should be illegal.

Yes, "three strikes and you're out" is preposterous - you can theoretically be jailed for life for stealing pizzas on three separate occasions, but not necessarily for murdering three different people!

That, among many other things. The jury system is just laughable. Those people are not qualified to do such a thing, they don't usually know shit about law, evidence gathering and the whole investigation process is known to them from afar. And then there's the isssue about 'special housing units', which is just an euphemism for torture. Not saying some don't deserve that, if someone hurt my loved ones, that's it, let them rot in there. But they are using this punishment way too excessively.
