I notice a lot of Europeans see the American South and immediately think of the "rednecks"
While there is certainly a redneck culture of the South due it's more rural nature, that isn't really the same as Southern culture, as rednecks exist in the Northeast as well as the West Coast and middle part of the country. The difference being, rednecks in the North have accents.
But the Southern culture is more about a kind of old Anglo culture that is complexed by African influence and the long awkward interaction of Anglos and African slaves as well as a propensity for good manners and respect and a sense of community. While the North was industrious and individual minded, the South was agrarian and more community minded. I compare the Southern culture to that of Scotland- which it pretty much is. Although, ironically, the South has more of eccentrics than in the North, where Southern families don't hide their crazy people, they put them out on display, Northerners send their crazy relatives to "shrinks" and never talk about it.
Southerners have more state pride than Northerners. Northerners are proud of their city. Their hometown. But Southerners are proud of their state , as well as their county.
Still, Europeans have a monolithic view of the Southern culture as simply "redneck" and unrefined. Maybe that's because they have never been to the South.
