The Balkans in general is more patriarchal and collectivist than the rest of Europe

North Albanians were one of the last "tribal" society in Europe, relatively isolated highlanders with a patriarchal tribal structure. Montenegrins had similar anthropological structure, but were more exposed to overall Serbian influence and became relatively more "tamed"

Patriarchal highland tribal structures are the anthropological basis of Mafia system, and are found among Corsicans, Sicilians, Albanians/Montenegrins, Caucasians, Kurds, Pashtuns in Afghanistan. I said Mafia system and not "gangs" like in Latin America, which is a different organized crime pattern (although with similarities)

If you add an external aggravating factor such as Islam (even if not totally practiced), which is by nature more patriarchal than Christianity, especially with the assymetrical bias against Muslim women being in couple with non-Muslim men (while the opposite is tolerated), you get a deeper anthropological gap
