Purely because of climate. You can't and feel no need to drink a lot of alcohol in warm climates.

Can be related to the fact that alcohol makes you feel warmer.
I doubt it has to do with EEF since both alcohol and the process of distillation were originally brought by the (now muslim) Middle-East.

Isn't mead associated with Scandinavia in Europe ?
