The major reason of Russian expansionism are the insecurity.This is due to Russian geography,They are all plains,almost no mountains,All frozen plains,Ice and snow sealed off their ports,polar madness drives people crazy,This cause the depression became the Core of Russian culture,The world culture I category as three types:Happy(often located in tropical area),Sad(People have long history of civilization) And Despair(The russian type),Despair is different from Sad,Sad culture still has "hope" in it,Despair not,Despair culture only has the destined destruction.

They are not warmongers. How many wars have Russia been involved in since WW2, compared with the US? And especially after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Russia only gets involved when it is directly on its border, a real threat. And, they were invited by the Syrian government to help against terrorists. Russians are not warmongers.
