Im not saying this to shake my own shishkebab so to speak and ofc the main thing is you go it sorted and are healing up.
But just saying ... I believe I was the 1st post to be closest to the correct diagnosis
of your problem.

I suggest check up with your Dr.
Could be nerve related eg a disc in your back pressing on a nerve.
Or maybe could be vascular like a blockage in a vein.
In any case get it checked out.Aditt: quit the smokes

BTW now that your in hospital would be a good opportunity to give up the fags and by that I dont mean homo's I mean cigarrettes.
You can ask hospital staff to give you nicotine patches to help you cease smoking (:
