Just looking at how grotesque the Versailles treaty was, I really can't imagine anything other than Fascism in a country torn by war and debt, and humiliated as a nation. The allied countries caused the disgrace that was Nazism by their own means.

Depends. Indications are high that a bloody civil war would have ensued had the communists not found a proper counter in the Nazis. It would have boiled down into a very bloody, very ugly mess between them, the Reichswehr and other WWI veterans.
