Well, Romans abandonded and exposed their own children to the elements, making them die or be raised as slaves, when it was in their interest to do so. One of the emperors himself did it to a bastard of his. Also, Spartan Greeks practiced eugeny, killing babies they considered deformed. So I don't know why Carthage would get all that bad rep, considering their rivals have more compelling evidence they commited infanticide. At best, it was on par with its peers.

It's true. The idols have been found, numerous other peoples wrote about it, and they even have the babies' remains in Tunis somewhere. A lot of Old Testament folklore testifies to its practice among the ancestors of the Hebrews too. Nothing amazing or unlikely in it at all.

Ancient Greece, my favorite historical civilisation ever. Specifically, the early years of Athens. The classical Greeks had an idealistic, forward-looking, warlike civilisation that believed in ignoring no lies and always sought to improve themselves. Greek paganism is also fascinating; their religious life was filled with hundreds of gods and goddesses and mystic tales, but it was still a very sublime religion. I am a huge fan of Greek Tragedy as well, a brilliant art form created by a brilliant people.
Ancient India is another one. The old Vedic culture, at its height, must have been rather amazing. Also, I think I'd make a good Aryan aristocrat. (And yes, it could've been an "European country" in the same sense as white-ruled South Africa, if it went the right way.)
Finally, an independent Scottish kingdom. Well, at this point it doesn't really matter, and I'd rather stay in the union, but it's still a good "What If".
Well, many civilisations around the Mediterranean, including some Phoenician ones, did sacrifice babies. It's very possible that the Carthaginians did it too.
Anyways, I think the reason why we all cheer for the Romans is because old Carthage was a degenerate Semitic merchant empire who had mercenaries to fight for them, while the Romans were a proud, warlike European culture who basically shaped Europe's future. It's very much "us vs. them".

Gallic empire (yes it was a thing) or maybe the confederated Gauls under Vercingetorix.
