Brazilian living in Argentina. Proud Estudiantes de La Plata member and supporter, but I'd rather kill myself than support the Argentinian national team (unless they're playing against European countries like the ones I mentioned before)

Why ?

Objectively speaking Messi moves the ball like no one else can. His dribbling and shooting are better than Ronaldo. He is much shorter than Ronaldo, yet excels more than him in runs and getting through players. Ronaldo has an obvious edge in aerial attack.. but when compared to Messi's ball movement it isn't that relevant anymore. Ronaldo can barely take 3 touches without the ball going out of bounds or ending up outside the stadium because his control is not aging quite well. Ronaldo is only a finisher now, and unfortunately, even then his finishing has been lacking in front of goal aside from penalty-taking. Lastly, Ronaldo's walking, and laziness is different from Messi's who actively looks for openings. For some reason, recently Ronaldo can't even predict, or perform intelligent position overtakes... he's just too slow now. That is my reasoning.

Supporter culture in Argentina is incomparable to any other country. Maybe some Eastern European and Balkan ultras can be impressive but they don't come close to Argentinian fans in numbers. If you come here to watch any 1st or 2nd division club game you'll see. Singing is non-stop (even at half-time) and it's very hard for a top 10 team to have empty stadiums throughout the year.

Other than a lot of upper class people who may feel the burn of a bad economy but not enough to make them miss a WC, there are barras (their version of ultras) who just spend their entire lives following their football team and the national team and do a ton of sacrifices to go. Btw, I think people exaggerate how bad Argentina is doing, especially compared to Brazil, for example. The current Argie government is a joke of an extremely unlikable leftist faction (Kirchnerismo) who carry bad reputation everywhere they go. Argentina is at their worse, but their worse is still better than the normal of many neighboring countries.

In Europe I think only England comes close.

Yes I know that the supporter culture in Argentina is deep-rooted, the atmosphere in the stadiums is amazing etc etc... BUT I don't remember ever seeing so many Argentinian supporters in other World Cups ( with the exception of Brazil 2014 which is a neighbor country), so I was really intrigued about it because going to Qatar is really expensive and those kind of people in the stadium were REAL football supporters (like the English tonight), not tourists who don't even know the names of the players...I stopped believing economic indexes long ago, it's all fabricated/manipulated...I guess Argentina is not that bad economically after all....while in Europe this winter

You sound like Cristiano Ronaldo is the only player that Messi competes against for the title of "best ever".

For example Mbappe who is only 22 or 23 has already done far more than both of them in World Cups.

Maradona, Pelé, Ronaldo Nazário, Romário etc were at their peak more decisive than Messi or CR7, they just didn't had such long careers/peaks and their overall stats are inferior... anyway I was curious to know the criteria of your analisys.

Sounds crazy that people spend their life savings to watch a bunch of millionaires playing football across the world in a real expensive country...

My question is, why specifically so many on this WC, way more than I remember in past world cups with the exception of Brazil which is affordable to travel for Argentinians. That puzzles me

Because savings and argentinos are 2 words that you will never see on the same sentence. I used to work with the Argentina market some time ago and that people spend like there's no tomorrow. This is also reinforced by their underperforming economy: due to their galloping inflation, there's no point saving, hence, they rather spend it all while they can.
