True. They should try and make society a better place instead. Are their pets a way to avoid the reality, perhaps?
Good observations. And then they try to compensate by teaching kids about not being racists, but deep down this is just a facade, and they don't really want to interact with foreigners.
Also, many swedes moved to the US for a better life. Sure, Sweden maybe hasn't executed people who disagree with the establishment, but individuals of different opinions have in one way or another been removed from society, be it intentionally or not. During the Swedish emigration to the US, 1.3 mil. Swedes emigrated (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swedis..._United_States), which was a big part of the population.
Nowadays, they remove people by socially isolating them, or giving them a label, so that they can get rid of certain individuals. Look at, for instance, how many kids get a diagnosis of ADHD etc. if they don't obey the teacher. It's fucking stupid.

The various conversations between Basil and Lord Henry, regarding Dorian, surely are laden with homosexual feeling. Basil's in love with Dorian. Seems to be drooling as he describes his "beauty".
It's been a few decades since I last read the book, but I think I remember reading about rentboys in the East End, along with the actress that Dorian "loves" (and then crushes, mercilessly). The whole thing left you with a squalid image of upper crust decadence and (and this is really, effective anti-semitism, rather than dull invective laden horror porn about SRA) creepy Jewish men enabling and servicing their vices.

Sure, I remember Basil spending a lot of his time on thinking of Dorian. But didn't he also kill Basil in the end because of how ugly the portrait of him became? I don't remember exactly right know (haven't read it in a while). I'm not the type of person who assumes homoerotic insinuations. At most, I thought they had a very close, homosocial, friendship, like brothers, but I don't know.
