Large ethnic minorities in Kazakhstan

Not many people know, but at one point in 20th century Russians were more numerous than Kazakhs in Kazakhstan. There was a Russification process (linguistically and ethnically) in USSR member states. That is why I don't understand why some people say Soviet Union was not Russian, but a "Union of various countries" or whatever.

When you look at the Russification of Ukraine and Kazakhstan during USSR, you can see who was in charge. Soviet Union = Russia.

In 1970 European ethnic groups (Russians, Ukrainians, Belarusians, Germans etc) made up over 50% of Kazakhstan's population, ethnic Kazakhs only 33%. Weird Russki/Soviet project in the middle of Asia.
