A large subway gold mine of Roman origin has been discovered by three historians in the area known as Las Ferreiruscas, near Puente Domingo Flórez (León) and in the surroundings of Las Médulas, a gold mine declared a World Heritage Site in 1997. "The mine had gone unnoticed until now because it is quite hidden by vegetation," Jorge Arias, one of the three researchers from the Institute of Cabreirense Studies who have discovered this site after several years of unsuccessful location, told EFE on Monday.

The discovery was made a short distance from the most emblematic Roman gold mine in Spain excavated in the open pit, located in the area of Las Médulas, in the vicinity of the town of the same name, in the Leon region of El Bierzo, and which is considered the largest open-pit gold mining exploration of the entire Roman Empire.
