Default Romania to overtake Portugal in GDP per capita

Romania set to overtake Portugal in terms of GDP per capita by 2024

    https://www.portugalresident.com/rom...apita-by-2024/

Very much as pundits have been warning for years, Portugal’s ‘ranking’ in terms of GDP per capita is relentlessly sliding the wrong way.

Since 2000, the country has dropped various places (from 15th slot). According to the European Commission’s October predictions, in 2024 Portugal is due to reach 20th place, behind Romania.

This all the more ‘galling’ in that Romania started this race at the bottom.

In 2000, Romania’s economy was in 28th place (or 27th now that Brexit has wiped the UK off the board), with a GDP per capita ranking of 26.4% of the European average.

By 2024 it is expected to have recovered 59 points, coming in with a ranking of 79% – while Portugal is viewed as likely to peg 78.8% “with Hungary and Poland at its heels”, writes Expresso.

I hope the 50k Romanians in Portugal stay there. although I know of quite a few that returned already, including a case of child not speaking Romanian, lol, parents didn't think they'd ever return so they didn't teach the kid Romanian and now kid is struggling in primary school

who's next? I suppose some other Mediterranean country?

Misleading title since it is only PPP and Portugal is ahead of Romania in pretty much everything with much better quality of life.

For how long though? Much of Eastern Europe was richer than Southern Europe before communism came into play. Now they're catching up, in part thanks to EU's money.

Romania was never richer than southern Europe, it were countries like Czech Republic that were industrial heartland of Habsburg Empire that were wealthier than even some western European powerhouses.
I've been to Romania and I am not impressed with how it is, so I take shiny stats about their incredible economic progress with grain of salt, because eye test looks different that that.

However, they did make huge progress since Iron Curtain fell and they do have bigger potential than most of European countries - Romania is big, stategically important, rich in natural resources, with black sea, high population and good tax system and it's attractive for investors.

It should become a well-off country, if they do something about Gypsy problem.

But anyway I don't think anyone would chose Romania over Portugal for living as of now, it's not even close.

Their economy was very similar to that of Portugal.

As for quality of life, despite the infamous Romanian migrant exodus, Portugal has an even higher emigration rate. And this is now. Give it 10 or 20 years.

GDP per capita means nothing if the romanian government does not spend money for living conditions and to eradicating poverty. Romania has one of the highest poverty rate in EU, highest migration rate to West etc. It seems romanians dont see much of this plus GDP money, im sure the reason is the high corruption. I have been to Transylvania what is pretty advanced region in general, and it was like the poor east Hungary. I did not see much difference.
Romania is still far away from Portugal.

Romania is still poor, the good numbers for growth come from it coming from 3rd world level poor around year 2000.

I grew up in a village that was basically Middle Ages with electricity, in summer we were using the corn field as toilet.

the new generation in the big cities however live no worse than people in cities in Portugal, Greece, parts of Italy, for sure. but the rural side is still very non-European, a random Romanian village looks like a random Kazakh village with the same mix of old and modern, same clothing type etc.

I do love that type of village and I am pro-Oriental, so my comments over the poverty and backwardness of Romania are only observations. I am more bothered by the religiousness and xenophobia of Romanians

Romania isn't there yet, but as a country it is becoming far greater in quality of life.
