Romania (and the rest of the former East Bloc) until 1990 was not an economy particularly focused on GDP growth. Also most graphics showing eastern euro gdp catching the level of portugal are misleading because they start at the 90's when all Eastern Euro countries were having massive recessions due to the collapse of Socialism. In the mid 80's prior to the crisis, gdp per capita of the People's Republic of Bulgaria for example was not that far from Portugal.

And again Bulgaria at the time was not an economy foccused on GDP.

yes, I posted OP mostly as interesting fact and to show growth of the Romanian economy. Portugal clearly has higher standard of living which isn't accounted for in GDP.

Average income in Transdanubia more similar to East Hungary than to Austria. If you divide Hungary in half the western half is wealthier but it is not uniformly wealthy. Tolna, Baranya and Somogy counties are similar to Alföld. There are tons of poor areas in SW Hungary that have lots of Gypsies.

I have talked about the lookig of settlements not the salary.

Much better on all quality of life figures without gypsies for both countries. I have this "want if no gypsy/Mortimer type lived in my country" dream for Romania because I think ethnic Romanians are mostly honest, hard working people that would do much better without gypsy dead weight.
