Westerners opinion on Bollywood

I’m Pakistani American and grew up watching Bollywood. My favorite celebrities were Shahrukh Khan, Salman Khan, Aishwaria Rai, Rani Mulherji, Govinda and Johnny Lever.

I know westerners probably don’t know too much about Bollywood. But I’m sure they have an idea. What do they think about the Indian movie industry ?

Nobody cares about Bollywood. They are worse than anime. Everyone else in the world considers it a laughing stock just because of how over the top they go with their action movies.



People from around the world consume American and to a lesser extent European media, however, Bollywood movies used to be popular in the good old Soviet Union, because those films were mostly romance musicals without much political overtones, and even the political movies normally featured a peasant revolting against bourgeoisie.




Since Russia has now gone back to its old Soviet past, Bollywood movies are back in Russian movie theaters.



From what I heard, Muslims are to Bollywood what Jews are to Hollywood. Russia has the largest Muslim population in all of Europe after all.
