I love Father Oleksa’s stories.
Not that ‘we’ were native Alaskans, but our Shamanic hunter-gatherer worldviews were/are similar and our relations with the first monks was similar, hence my nostalgic respect towards the old Novgorod era and the Orthodox Church.

Me too!!!
The reverence is so deeply ingrained in our souls.
When I hear the hymn at the beginning of this documentary, I cannot help it, tears start to swell up and my heart hurt.
It was/is absolutely unbelievable, unthinkable what happened in Russia during the Soviet times.

Another, a bit simpler version of the same hymn.
Valamo/Valaam was our Ancient Sacred Site onto which the monastery was built and the monks who went to Alaska were from Valamo, therefore they behaved the same way towards the ‘natives’ there as they had done with us. Hence all the Father Oleksa’s stories sound sooo familiar.

In his Ecclesia Romana, Pope Gregory XIII (1502-1585) honored the Armenian Christians, the foremost Crusader Ally, with this statement:
"Among the good deeds which the Armenian people has done towards the church and the Christian world, it should especially be stressed that, in those times when the Christian princes and the warriors went to retake the Holy Land, no people or nation, with the same enthusiasm, joy and faith came to their aid as the Armenians did, who supplied the Crusaders with horses, provision and guidance. The Armenians assisted these warriors with their utter courage and loyalty during the Holy wars."
