Thank you. It is a unique and beautiful language. In all fairness though it's not London's fault now why more people don't speak it. Irish hasn't been dominant on the east coast of Ireland for about 500 years and on the west coast the famine put the nail in the coffin for the Irish language. What is interesting is that the language revival was started by two members of the Protestant Ascendancy. William Butler Yeats was a driving force behind the revival of the Irish language and the other one was Douglas Hyde who was the first President of Ireland.

It's also been nominated at the Baftas for Film Not in English Language and also Best Screenplay.
Irish films enter as foreign films in the Oscars?

For the same reason that most Basques speak Spanish or French and not Euskara.

The Banshees of Inisherin is Irish but nominated for 9 Oscars but that is in English. The Quiet Girl or in Irish An Cailín Ciúin is in the International Category because it is majority Irish language so it is categorised as a foreign language film. A Welsh language film Hedd Wyn was also nominated for an Oscar in the International Film Category in the past. The Welsh did that in 1993 but this is the first time an Irish language film has been nominated at the Oscars.

So the foreign film category would actually be a foreign language film(no english) category, because it doesn't make sense for an Irish film to be in that category.

What power does London have over Ireland?

It's not feasible, they have been speaking english for hundreds of years, it's like asking the spanish speaking countries in LA to stop speaking spanish (Chile already does lol), it's not possible

For Best International Film it has to be not in English so the UK could enter a film in Scots Gaelic and it could be nominated.

The nominated films are the following:

“All Quiet on the Western Front” (Germany)

    “The Quiet Girl” (Ireland)

    “EO” (Poland)

    “Close” (Belgium)

    “Argentina, 1985” (Argentina)

I know Argentina, 1985 won Best Foreign Film at the Golden Globes. The Quiet Girl didn't even get into that. I think All Quiet on the Western Front will win the Oscar as it has so many nominations and is a very high profile film.

The UK doesn't even need to be featured in that category, it's like the US putting a movie of their own in there.
The only reason why Ireland is there is because of a film in the Irish language, because Irish cinema is not taken as foreign cinema. But an Irish film in the Irish language has no chance to compete with an Irish one in the English language.

Yes, our film won the Golden Globe, although I don't know if it won the Oscar too.

Oscars aren't on until March. The next awards are the Baftas which are on 19 Feb.

These are the International Film nominees for the Baftas.

All Quiet on the Western Front
    Argentina, 1985
    Corsage
    Decision to Leave
    The Quiet Girl

Corsage is from Austria and Decision to Leave is Korean.

I don't see a problem with UK entering a foreign language film. It is a good way to promote the language and it has to be voted on to get a nomination so if it is good enough to get nominated it deserves the recognition. It lifts the profile of languages like Welsh and Scots Gaelic. Also an Irish language film lifts the profile of Irish. Many people do not even realise these countries have their own languages that aren't English.
