U.S. rail infrastructure has been neglected since the 50s and was never really re-visited because we thought "everyone drives cars now, we only need it for freight and freight can go over rougher lengths of track". The main reason we don't have high speed rail, is because so much of our rail network is in bad condition, that it would cost billions to make a single northeast route with >90% high speed sections. Our amtrak acela service only goes at its top speed on a few short sections of track.

True. And it just shows that those arguments you mentioned is more like marketing and not as much a reality.
But at the same time rail cannot be ignored by serious corporations, since it's used for freight on large scale? IDK if Amtrak is applicable here since we aren't talking about travel rail, but rather commercial rail.
