It's the ex-german cities that shine.
Most transylvanian cities were built by hungarians just saying. Germans lived only some parts of Transylvania. It seems the most backwards region is rather Máramaros in North:

I dont think that Arad or Cluj where tons of hungarian live is the most baclward.

This is what I've seen too when I last visited Transilvania.

Hungarian/Szekely places were in pretty poor shape, Romanian ones looked nicer in comparison.

Székelys are rural peoples, of course rural places are poorer than cities. The question was not that. Hungarians are central europeans, romanians are not, Transylvania is partly central european because of hungarians and its hungarian historical heritage. This is the only reason.
The richest parts of Transylvania is where hungarians or germans lived. Brassó, Kolozsvár (Cluj), and Temesvár is the richest, Brassó and Temesvár were german cities, Kolozsvár (Cluj) was majority hungarian. Nowadays these places are also multicultural, just like in the past. Funny if someone claims that Transylvania is CE, but at the same time someone also claims that hungarians make it less central european, its just laughable.

My opinion is the diversity maked Transylvania stronger. Romanians are also contributed a lot to Transylvania, just like hungarians or germans. Every ethnicity had its own success, and they maked Transylvania more greater together. This is the keyword.

Living back in the woods and hills not always bad. I bet their neighbors help when needed unlike cities. I live in rural Tennessee and never lock my house and leave the keys in my cars and we always help our neighbors.

Romania overall is one of the most rural countries in Europe, about 45% of the population lives in rural areas, with all the good and bad that comes along with that.

Historically, in Transylvanian cities lived mostly Hungarians and Germans (though this urban population was a very small percentage of the overall), while the majority of Romanians lived in rural parts. Today, Germans have left Romania, and Hungarians in Transylvania live into two different realities: one, of the "spread-out" Hungarians, who live among Romanians, and another, of the "clustered" Hungarians, who live in the center of the country, (self-)isolated from the rest of the population.

It should be clear which of these two Hungarian groups has an economic advantage. The "spread-out" Hungarians are successful in the Romanian society, and mix with the majority, while the "clustered" Hungarians have backed themselves into a corner, by adopting a separate economy based on tourism with groups from Hungary, which slowly is putting them (the Szekely region) among the most economically disadvantaged counties in Romania.
