SourceWe might be an increasingly tech-savvy society, but most of us are pretty lazy when it comes to our internet passwords. Gems such as “password” and “123456″ were among the most common passwords in 2011 unveiled by an internet security company that analyzed files of millions of passwords stolen by hackers.
SplashData, a password management company, compiled its list of the 25 Worst Passwords of the Year. “Passw0rd” and “111111″ were among the most common internet passwords, as were the names “michael,” “ashley” and “bailey” and keyboard patterns “qwerty” and “qazwsx.”
Even as secure websites more toward demanding more complex passwords involving both letters and numbers, users still found way to make their codes easy to crack. Among the most common alphanumeric passwords were “abc123″ and “trustno1.”
Sports terms also proved popular, with “baseball” and “football” topping the list. (“Hockey” didn’t make the top 25). The company had no explanation for why words like “monkey” “shadow” and “dragon” were common.
Hackers may be finding more sophisticated ways to breach internet security, but repeatedly trying common passwords is one of their most basic tricks, the company said. It recommended using passwords at least eight characters long and including special characters such as spaces, dashes and question marks.
