Default Does the existence of thousands of languages make the world interesting, or hinder common humanity?

In other words, does the existence of different languages make life more interesting - particularly when travelling - or is it an impediment to the creation of a global consciousness and unity?

Co-operation failed when England and its American colonies who had the same language went to war against each other.

Language is an important part of culture and cultural identity. It's always good to know other, widely used languages rather than only your native one, but the structure of your native language and/or the one you use the most in your daily life influences your thinking and as such behaviour; what words there are or aren't for certain concepts and ideas, how broad the vocabulary, how loose or solid the word order, even the pronunciation.

Besides, a shared language - or languages close enough to be understood without translation - doesn't immediately mean cooperation, as many cases have proven, the Balkans, Britain vs. American colonies, the wars between German-speaking and Italian-speaking minor states in the past.

"Now all my tales are based on the fundemental premise that common human laws and interests and emotions have no validity or significance in the vast cosmos-at-large.... To achieve the essence of real externality, whether of time or space or dimension, one must forget that such things as organic life, good and evil, love and hate, and all such local attributes of a negligible and temporary race called mankind, have any existence at all."
