Peaky Blinders
Im Mittelpunkt der Serie steht die aus Birmingham stammende Familie Shelby, die der Kern der namensgebenden Gangsterbande Peaky Blinders ist. Die Shelbys sind irisch-katholischer Abstammung, zusätzlich haben sie Irish Travellers und Roma unter ihren Vorfahren, weswegen sie von ihren Kontrahenten häufig abfällig als „Zigeuner“ beschimpft und unterschätzt werden (sie kommunizieren gelegentlich auch auf Romani, um ihren Kontrahenten einen Schritt voraus zu sein).
The focus of the series is the Shelby family from Birmingham, who are the core of the eponymous gangster gang Peaky Blinders. The Shelbys are of Irish-Catholic descent, in addition they have Irish Travelers and Roma among their ancestors, which is why they are often disparagingly insulted and underestimated by their opponents(they occasionally communicate in Romani to stay one step ahead of their opponents).
Cultural impact
According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), Peaky Blinders has had a detectable cultural impact in the UK. In 2018, the name Arthur surged into the top 10 boys names for the first time since the 1920s, and Ada jumped into the girls' top 100 for the first time in a century too. The assumption reached by the ONS is that the popularity of these names was inspired by the characters Arthur Shelby Jr. and Ada Thorne.
