Jewish leaders condemn Polish coin honouring WWII partisan accused of murdering Jews

Jewish leaders in Poland – including the country’s chief rabbi – have criticised the central bank for producing a commemorative coin honouring an underground officer whose unit has been accused of killing Jews.

The figure in question – Józef Kuraś, also known by his nom-de-guerre Ogień (Fire) – is regarded by many in Poland as a national hero for fighting against both wartime Nazi-German occupation and the postwar communist authorities. But some historians say he was also responsible for war crimes against ethnic minorities.

Last week, the National Bank of Poland (NBP) – whose president is a close associate of ruling party leader Jarosław Kaczyński – released a silver coin commemorating Kuraś as one of Poland’s “cursed soldiers” (żolnierze wyklęci/niezłomni) who resisted the introduction of communism.

The Institute of National Remembrance admits that “Jews died at the hands of the [Polish] underground”. However, this was not because they were Jews, but because “of their service in the [communist] organs of repression, Polish Workers’ Party or cooperation with the Department of Security”.

The institute also argues that, because so many Jews were present in the areas where Józef Kuraś’s unit operates, “if [he] had really wanted to murder the Jewish population (as propagandists of the [communist] Polish People’s Republic claimed), the number of victims would have been much higher”.

However, other historians, including Jan Gross, Jerzy Wójcik and Maciej Korkuć (an IPN employee), have pointed to an incident in which Kuraś’s unit killed eleven unarmed Jewish Holocaust survivors seeking to flee to Palestine in 1946.

Majority of people were antisemitic at that time and that applies to Poland as well.

But I consider it somewhat annoying how the organised Jewry permanently is mingeling into other peoples' business and condemning and criticizing. One could well do without that. The Jews are on the best way to re-gain their old "popularity".

I would like Poles to be antisemitic for at least one year in our more than a thousand years of history.
Unfortunately, they were and are Europe's biggest suckers who have allowed the jews to despise them for centuries. Any talk about "polish antisemitism" is political and media nonsense.

Gross stated that Poles killed more jews than killed Germans during the war. This is nonsense. Apart from the fact that Poles often risked their own and their families' lives by hiding jews. Poles have the most righteous among the nations of the world - lots of them. While from the countries of western Europe only some people!
Mathematically, the Poles, being the fourth Allied army during the war, killed a lot of german soldiers.
Gross' nonsense cannot be commented on. He worked at Yale University. You know what it is and who it is for. His objectivity and credibility is equal to zero.
And the Poles should finally learn that Jews must not be allowed to gossip. For hundreds of years of helping jews, Poles have only insults and problems from them.
