Washington has double standards when it comes to following the rule against violating territorial integrity, among other global norms, FP's Stephen Walt writes.

Yeah, and suffice to say there's a double standard in their policies toward Saudi Arabia as compared to those other countries.

And, more specifically, Iran.

Meanwhile, the following information may be of great interest, and it may interest some of the readers and members of The Apricity to know this.

Jyothsna Yalapalli: This infographic by #EhsanSoltani shows the significant inroads made by China in the Middle East and how China has surpassed the US of A as the largest trading partner - the data used is from the World Trade Organization (WTO). China is the largest buyer of crude oil in the world, and it buys more from the Saudi Arabia than anywhere else. Almost half of the $87.3 billion bilateral trade between the two nations in 2021 was comprised of China’s crude oil imports. This accounted for 77% of China’s total imports from Saudi Arabia, which also included goods like #Plastic —a petroleum product. Saudi Arabia, in the meantime, imported over $30 billion worth of goods including technological equipment, telephones, and light fixtures. Saudi Arabia is strengthening its commercial and security ties with China, as U.S. influence wanes in the Middle East region. Recently, the Saudi government approved partial membership in the #ShanghaiCooperationOrganization, a political and security bloc that includes China, Russia and #India. The decision comes ahead of a May meeting of foreign ministers from the regional grouping, where Iran recently gained full member status.

THE REAL MOTIVATION BEHIND IRAN'S DEAL
WITH SAUDI ARABIA

The agreement is about far more than just normalizing ties with Riyadh.

Foreign Policy: The China-brokered agreement between the Islamic Republic of Iran and Saudi Arabia announced last month generated huge buzz, with some observers going as far as proclaiming it a victory for international security. But much of the analysis has missed a key point: For Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), the deal is about far more than normalizing ties with the Saudi government in Riyadh. Instead, it is about further facilitating, along with China and Russia, the rise of a new anti-Western global order and excluding the United States from a new regional arrangement. Indeed, from the view of Khamenei and the IRGC, restoring ties with Saudi Arabia is the least important aspect of the deal. What’s most important is that it’s one more milestone toward achieving the regime’s grand ambitions—this time with powerful friends. The 83-year-old supreme leader, like his predecessor, believes a clash of civilizations has long existed between the so-called Islamic world and the West. The long-term project of the Islamic Revolution has been to restore an Islamic civilization, with Iran’s Shiite Islamists at the helm. In the modern era, the United States and the liberal international order it leads have always been seen as the ultimate obstacle—the Great Satan—standing in the way of achieving that goal. And for the Islamic Republic’s 44 years of existence, the regime has concentrated all its resources on shaking the very core of the West’s legitimacy. In recent years, this aim has come to bind Khamenei with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping—each unlikely bedfellows.

The leadership of big, prominent, influential, and popular American institutions is for sale to the highest bidder — and very often, sovereign-wealth funds of brutal regimes are the highest bidder.

After the murder and dismemberment of Jamal Khashoggi at the hands of the Saudi Arabian government, the U.S. government needed tell the Saudis: “We’ve always had differences, but this time you’ve crossed a line, and we cannot avert our eyes from this. He was a U.S. green-card holder. Even if he had [Qatar] ties to the government of Qatar, what you did to him cannot be justified by any wrongdoing he did. We are not ending our diplomatic relationship, but your actions have damaged our relationship, and it will take time to repair this damage.”
