Default Rumble: Ukraine seeks to prevent military information leaks

Ukraine's leaders discussed ways to prevent leaks of military information on Friday (April 7) after secret documents detailing U.S. and NATO efforts to help the country plan a counter-offensive against Russia's invasion reportedly appeared on social media. Angela Johnston reports.

Default Breaking news: Leaked files suggest Ukraine’s air force is in peril if not reinforced

A HUGE INFLUX OF MUNITIONS IS NEEDED

    LEAKED DOCUMENTS SUGGEST
UKRAINIAN AIR DEFENSE IS IN PERIL
    IF NOT REINFORCED

Ukraine needs a munitions influx to boost its air defense and keep Russia from changing the course of the war, leaked Pentagon documents suggest.

NY Times: For more than a year, Ukrainian air defenses, reinforced by Western weaponry, have kept Russian planes at bay. But without a huge influx of munitions, Ukraine’s entire air defense network, weakened by repeated barrages from Russian drones and missiles, could fracture, according to U.S. officials and newly leaked Pentagon documents, potentially allowing President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia to unleash his lethal fighter jets in ways that could change the course of the war. In the early days of the invasion, Russian aircraft flew hundreds of combat flights to bomb targets in Ukraine. But a combination of quick thinking by Ukrainian commanders and poor intelligence and bad aim by Russian pilots left many of Ukraine’s warplanes and air defenses intact, preventing Moscow from gaining control of the skies above the battlefield and forcing Russia to keep much of its air force out of the fight. Now Pentagon officials are worried that Moscow’s barrage of attacks from afar is draining Ukraine’s stores of the missiles it uses to defend itself. And a Pentagon assessment from late February contained in the trove of leaked documents that were discovered circulating online last week paints an even grimmer picture. Stocks of missiles for Soviet-era S-300 and Buk air defense systems, which make up 89 percent of Ukraine’s protection against most fighter aircraft and some bombers, were projected to be fully depleted by May 3 and mid-April, according to one of the leaked documents. The document, which was issued on Feb. 28, based the assessment on consumption rates at the time. It is not clear if those rates have changed. The same document assessed that Ukrainian air defenses designed to protect troops on the front line, where much of Russia’s air power is concentrated, will “be completely reduced” by May 23, resulting in strains on the air defense network deeper into Ukrainian territory.

If that happens, officials say, Moscow could decide it is finally safe for its prized fighter jets and bombers to enter the fray and directly threaten the outcome of the war on the ground. Senior Pentagon officials say that such a move would be a major challenge for Ukraine, particularly if Russian fighter jets and bombers are given freer rein to attack Ukrainian troop positions and essential artillery targets on the ground. In a move to shore up Ukraine’s air defenses, the Biden administration announced last week that it would send additional air defense interceptors and munitions as part of a $2.6 billion aid package, part of which will be used to help Kyiv prepare for a planned spring offensive against Russian troops. Whether that will be enough depends, officials say, on a number of factors, including whether NATO allies make their own deliveries, and whether Mr. Putin continues to decline to risk his valued warplanes. The downing of an American drone by a Russian fighter jet over the Black Sea last month exacerbated fears that the Kremlin is looking for ways to use its air force in the war. Russia still has considerable air capability, with about 900 fighter jets and around 120 bombers, according to the World Directory of Modern Military Aircraft.

(CNN)—A Russian paramilitary group fighting in Ukraine on behalf of Vladimir Putin attempted to buy weapons and equipment from an unlikely source: NATO member Turkey, according to a leaked US intelligence document that was obtained by CNN. The leaked document appears to show the lengths the Russian private military group Wagner has gone to try to further strengthen its capabilities as the war in Ukraine – in which it is playing a key role – continues on with no signs of abating. As a NATO member, Turkey is broadly considered a partner nation to the US and other countries providing direct military support to Ukraine and it has publicly expressed opposition to Russia’s invasion. It is also home to a major US military base where nuclear weapons are stored which act as an obvious warning sign to deter Russian aggression against NATO members. It is also home to a major US military base where nuclear weapons are stored and act as an obvious warning sign to deter Russian aggression against NATO members. According to the US signals intelligence reporting cited in the document, personnel from the Wagner Group met with “Turkish contacts” in early February with the intent “to purchase weapons and equipment from Turkey” that could then be used by Wagner mercenaries who are fighting alongside Russian forces in Ukraine.

There is no evidence that shows that Turkey has moved forward with any arms sales to the Wagner Group.

Still, the potential of a NATO ally selling weapons to Russian mercenary forces would likely raise serious concerns in Washington and complicate Ankara’s relationship with other NATO members.

The details about the February meeting, which were outlined in a section of the leaked document titled, “Mali, Russia, Turkey: Vagner seeks weapons from Ankara,” suggest US officials believe the Russian mercenary outfit has at least tested the waters.

Default Breaking News: F.B.I. Arrests National Guardsman in Leak of Classified Documents

Leader of Online Group Where Secret Documents Leaked
    Is Air National Guardsman

Federal investigators were actively searching for the person who leaked top secret documents
that revealed government secrets about the Ukraine war.

Authorities say Jack Teixeira, a 21-year-old member of the Massachusetts Air National Guard,
posted sensitive materials in an online chat group.

Federal officials are investigating leaks of classified U.S. intelligence revealing government secrets about the Ukraine war.

Attorney General Merrick Garland announced the airman’s arrest in connection with the unauthorized removal and transmission of classified information.

An arrest has been made in the inquiry into the leaked documents. Here’s what we know.

NORTH DIGHTON, Mass. — Federal investigators on Thursday arrested a 21-year-old air national guardsman who they believe is linked to a trove of leaked classified U.S. intelligence documents, which have upended relations with American allies and exposed weaknesses in the Ukrainian military.

The man, whom The New York Times was first to identify as Jack Teixeira, is a member of the intelligence wing of the Massachusetts Air National Guard and is tied to an online group where the leaked documents first appeared.

Exclamation Western special forces on the ground in Ukraine, shows leaked documents

Special forces from the West are on the ground in Ukraine, according to classified documents leaked online. The largest contingent is from Britain (50), followed by NATO members Latvia (17), France (15) and the US (14).

It is unclear what the special forces are exactly doing, where they are or whether their numbers have consistently been at this level. However, the revelation confirms what many have speculated since the war began February last year. A number of US documents marked "top secret" have been leaked recently, outlining compromising details about the war in Ukraine and its Western allies. They have not been verified.

Why ban TikTok when classified info can be leaked using other platforms, a Post writer asks...

While lawmakers were holding a hearing on TikTok last month where they “crowded into a packed Capitol hearing room to harangue” TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew, “What members of Congress didn’t know was that state secrets had been trickling out for months on social media and were beginning to circulate in ever-wider online forums — not on TikTok, but on U.S.-owned Discord,” Oremus writes. “In the two weeks after the TikTok hearing, those classified documents would make their way into public view on U.S.-owned Twitter — and remain there for days, as owner Elon Musk mocked the idea that he ought to remove them.” Oremus underscores that the leaks “didn’t stem from any foreign adversary’s sinister plot” but instead from a “21-year-old U.S. National Guard member’s desire to impress his online pals.” He says the leak is part of a “colorful 21st-century tradition of secrets spilled online, from WikiLeaks’ earliest uploads to Russian operatives’ hack of the Democratic National Committee.” Why ban TikTok when it’s not the only way American data and information can be compromised, the writer seems to suggest. The write-up is largely a continuation of a similar argument Oremus made last month around the hearing: “America’s online privacy problems are much bigger than TikTok.” The piece claims that, “U.S. officials have been warning about TikTok for four years without providing specific evidence of harm.” This is despite a mountain of reporting on the app’s threats. The Post has also taken up the argument advanced by some of the more nakedly self-interested Democrats in Congress, arguing that the fight over TikTok is a “generational” one because “social media and TikTok in particular provide a means to speak truth to power directly, immediately and loudly.”

So what gives? The Washington Post previously published combative scoops about the dangers of the app before this most recent explosion of propaganda. The Washington Examiner noted last month that the Washington Post “can’t stop shilling for TikTok.” It suggests the paper is carrying water for the app because it has 1 million followers on its own TikTok account and even has a designated “TikTok team.” The Washington Post has also allowed the app to advertise within its pages. The TikTok ads come after the Washington Post previously came under fire for accepting more than $4.6 million from China Daily, an English-language newspaper controlled by the CCP, between 2016 and 2020. As of May 2021, the Washington Post — and the New York Times and Wall Street Journal — had severed ties with China Daily, according to the Washington Free Beacon.

Airman Shared Sensitive Intelligence More Widely and for Longer Than Previously Known

A Discord user matching the profile of Jack Teixeira distributed intelligence to a larger chat group, days after the beginning of the Ukraine war.

The Air National Guardsman accused of leaking classified documents to a small group of gamers had been posting sensitive information months earlier than previously known and to a much larger chat group, according to online postings reviewed by The New York Times. In February 2022, soon after the invasion of Ukraine, a user profile matching that of Airman Jack Teixeira began posting secret intelligence on the Russian war effort on a previously undisclosed chat group on Discord, a social media platform popular among gamers. The chat group contained about 600 members. The case against Airman Teixeira, 21, who was arrested on April 13, pertains to the leaking of classified documents on another Discord group of about 50 members, called Thug Shaker Central. There, he began posting sensitive information in October 2022, members of the group told The Times. His job as an information technology specialist at an Air Force base in Massachusetts gave him top secret clearance.
